Black and Honolulu Blue

My First Book

I wrote Black and Honolulu Blue at just the right time: Long enough after I retired to gain some perspective but soon enough to recall details of the pain and the glory.

More Than an NFL Memoir

The subtitle In the Trenches of the NFL is a bit misleading. Not to worry, Lion fans; Detroit football is well represented.

Yet some of my clearest and most startling recollections are from high school and college. If you played scholastically, you’ll love the Broken Bones! and Greatest Hits chapters. And yes, there’s one for JoePa too, which might surprise you.

From the Trenches

Yes, I wrote Black and Honolulu Blue from an “in the trenches” perspective: As an offensive lineman my entire career, it was the only view I knew!

You can say I was a keen observer, but some things stuck with me more than others. Certainly, one summer I have no problem recalling is my rookie pre-season camp (Welcome to the NFL, Rookie).

The book, however, isn’t all fist fights, big hits, and blown-out knees. I tried to capture what football was like from a woman’s perspective in Women of the Game. Both my mom and my wife had to put up with a lot.

Dare I say that there’s something for everyone in Black and Honolulu Blue, and you don’t have to be a football fan to enjoy it.
